Current Bill Summary

SB 951 - This act would modify provisions of election law.

This act would change the opening date for filing a declaration for candidacy for office in political subdivisions and special districts from the fifteenth to the thirteenth Tuesday prior to the election.

This act also would change the deadline for withdrawing as a candidate from the sixth Tuesday to the eighth Tuesday prior to the election.

Currently, the time period to file a declaration of candidacy for nomination at the primary election runs for one month, from the last Tuesday in February to the last Tuesday in March, in general election years. This act would change the time period to two weeks, running from the second Tuesday to the fourth Tuesday in March.

This act also adds a class four election offense of accepting compensation for registering voters, except persons authorized to do so by law.

This act is nearly identical to HB 1500 (1998).
