Current Bill Summary

SB 738 - This act would allow election authorities the option of providing advance voting (voting before the election).

Advance voting dates would extend from 20 days to 5 days before the election. The election authority would be allowed to establish advance voting hours.

The reasons which currently must be given for absentee voting (voter is out of town, ill, or in jail or because of employment or religious belief) shall not apply up until 5 days before the election.

This act allows absentee voting for overseas voters, but only for federal and statewide candidates and statewide ballot issues (not state senators and representatives). This provision is similar to part of SB 710 (1998).

This act is similar to SB 181 (1997).
