Current Bill Summary

SB 799 - This act repeals an existing prohibition of political participation by State merit system employees. State employees may participate in partisan political activities but they may not use their office to encourage or discourage political activity, including making a contribution to a candidate, and may not engage in political activities while in uniform or in a state vehicle. An employee may have political contributions deducted from his pay, to be paid to the organization chosen by the employee.

Violation of this act is a Class Three election offense (one year in jail and a fine of $2,500). The act is similar to SB 473 (1995).
