Current Bill Summary

SB 473 - An employee of the state may participate in politics, but the employee cannot use his official position to influence an election. Employees are prohibited from soliciting campaign contributions from subordinates, from encouraging or discouraging political activity on the part of another person who has an issue pending before the employee's agency. Employees may not engage in political activity while on duty, while wearing an official uniform or while using a state vehicle. Violation of the act is a class three election offense, punishable by a term of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500.
