HB 1347 Requires students at public institutions of higher education to take courses regarding United State Constitution, the Missouri Constitution, American History, and governmental institutions

Current Bill Summary

- Prepared by Senate Research -

HCS/HB 1347 - Currently, students at all public and private colleges, except private trade schools, are required to take an examination regarding the United States Constitution, the Missouri Constitution, American history, and governmental institutions. This act eliminates the aforementioned requirement for private colleges and applies it only to candidates for an associate of arts or bachelor's degree, beginning with freshmen who enroll for the fall 2007 semester. The act allows the requirement to be satisfied by an examination or a three-hour course and requires public institutions to report on compliance with the requirement. Further, the act eliminates the current law duty of the commissioners of Higher Education and Elementary and Secondary Education to prescribe lists of suitable textbooks.
