Missouri State Senate
Term Limits

On November 3, 1992, the voters of Missouri approved an amendment to Missouri's Constitution (Article III, Section 8) limiting the total amount of service a legislator may serve in the General Assembly. The voters of Missouri approved term limits by a margin of 75% to 25%.

An individual may only serve eight years in the Missouri House of Representatives and eight years in the Missouri Senate. The amendment limits the total amount of individual legislative service to sixteen years and applies to all individuals elected to the General Assembly after November 3, 1992.

For the 2004 election, 10 current members will not be eligible to run again for the Senate.

For the 2006 election, 5 current members will not be eligible to run again for the Senate.

For the 2008 election, 7 current members will not be eligible to run again for the Senate.

These numbers are subject to change based on the fact that members may resign, retire or are defeated at their next election.

In 2005, 74% of Missouri's Senators will have two years or less of experience in the Senate.
