Current Bill Summary

SB 83 - This act amends two provisions both of which set maximum limits on the liability of parents and guardians for the acts of minor children. Under current law, a juvenile court which has exercised jurisdiction over a minor child may order the child's parents to pay restitution up to $4,000 to the victim of an offense committed by the juvenile. Under a separate provision, a parent or guardian of an unemancipated minor may be held liable for up to $2,000 for any act of intentional destruction of property committed by their child or ward. This act increases the parental-liability caps on both of these statutes to a uniform $20,000.
